Discussion of the Day

Author Post
Annie Slee As we have lots of new people joining our training today (welcome everyone!), we thought it would be a great idea to post a comment here every day for everyone to discuss.
So here we go with our comment for today :-
Safer Internet Day is coming soon (5th February 2013) - what would you do to make the internet a safer place?
Now it s over to you! We look forward to reading your comments.....
To make the Internet a safer place a large campaign should be done all over the medias: radio, television, papers and large websites, and the role of the family must not be forgotten, because through it many things are changed, but behind everything we will still need a trustful group of moderators to be there all the time.
I think everything starts at the user level, and since people are increasingly using the Net at very early age, them it comes to the parents inform and advise their children about what is the internet and how to use it. It´s like to explain what is the street and what are the good guys and bad guys and how to differentiate them. Though it might be sometimes more complicated in the digital world, the idea is the same: recognize risks and perils.
Annie Slee Thank you Jimmy and Carlos for your excellent comments.
Following on from your comments, it is so essential that parents can control their children s online access. With this in mind, I have recently become aware of a great new award winning app that has been designed by a Dad wanting to control his children's access to the internet on their mobile (cell) phone. Do you have any good ideas for keeping children safe online?
Granted, this is more of a question than a reply.
I ve seen how cable TV providers have parental controls on what type of show can be watched. Why can't the internet have the same type of controls? Let's say you give your child a PC or mobile phone. You as a responsible parent pre-program the type of content that can be received on that particular device, and the system blocks out the rest. Maybe this isn't economically feasible, I don't know, but I sure would like to see this happen someday.
Annie Slee Thanks Luis - great to see you here smile

Today I want to discuss new measures that David Cameron announced before Christmas. In the future, anyone buying a new computer or signing up with a new ISP will be asked, when they first log in, if they have children. If the answer is yes, they will be taken through a process of installing anti-pornography filters, as well as a series of questions on how stringent they wish the restrictions to be.
Do you think this is the right thing to do?
Let people know about Safer Internet Day its a good way to start, not many people knows about it and what its represent.

I would promote it on my gaming community :D
Hello Annie,

Concerning your today's discussion post, I am sure it's a great idea, as a preventive measure it'll absolutely help mostly those parents who have user or less computer skills. As software it's heard or known, but probably it's not that evident that everybody knows what for and how to install it. Now parents/ adults being pushed slightly and informed directly about the matter/ threat, I really hope the acceptance should be very high.
Kind regards, Marina
Annie Slee Hi Loan and Marina,
I'm pleased to hear, Loan, that you will promote Safer Internet Day - perhaps that's something that we all can do?
I agree with you Marina - let's hope that when this new measure comes into force there will be a high take up and that it will be successful in keeping the internet a safer place for our children.
Annie Slee Hi everyone,
Today I want to give you a link to an article from the Wall Street Journal which details changes by the US regulators to update COPPA (the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998). (Please copy and paste the following into your browser)

Annie Slee Hello! As it's Friday today I thought I would give you a light hearted quote! It is from Walt Disney:-

Would like to hear some of your favourite quotes too....
Have a great weekend everyone smile

Hi Annie.
I watched a film the other day and this stood out for me. It went something like this.

WHAT WE THINK WE BECOME
Thoughts become words
Words become actions
Actions become habit
Habit becomes character
Character is who we are.
Annie Slee Hello!
Thank you to Nina for your quote - I thought it was really great smile
Today I want to post a link for you to an article I was reading on socialmediatoday.com. It is about plans at Disney World to track users by giving them wireless bracelets to wear when they are in the parks.

What do you think about this?
Annie Slee Hello!

Today I am posting a link to a new tool being released at the end of January, designed to "protect children from predators and abusive marketers on the internet"

Sounds like a great product - what do you think?
Annie Slee Hi everyone!

Here is a link to an article on livescience.com saying that 30% of teenagers meet online "friends" offline.

This kind of statistic makes me so scared especially as my daughter is nearly 10. What do you think?
